Microflora Farm

Farmer & Dietitian Consulting Services

About

We met as Peace Corps volunteers serving in the Eastern Province of Zambia. We share a passion for food and our environment. Brooks is a farmer and educator with more than 14 years of experience. Nicole is a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist trained at the Mayo Clinic; with over a decade of experience. After years of family, friends, colleagues, and random acquaintances asking for advice on gardening, cooking, dieting, and nutrition; we started this company to share our passion and experience with others.

Why Microflora?

We are interested in the known connections between the human and soil microbiomes. We also recognize the power of the enteric nervous system and the research showing that cultivating a healthy gut can lead to a healthier mind. When referring to microflora we are giving recognition to the community of microorganisms that have a symbiotic relationship within living soil and the human gut. While we recognize the term microflora has been more accurately replaced with the term microbiota, we are giving homage to the foundations of the study of the microbiome. Additionally, as proponents of eating a diet diverse in plants we are also recognizing the connections within the Kingdom Plantae.

Where is the farm?

Our goal since the early days of our relationship has been to one day own and operate our own farm. We have made strides in that direction but the timing has not been right. We decided providing consultation services in food and farming would be a good transitional business as our life builds deeper roots and flourishes.

"If you truly get in touch with a piece of carrot, you get in touch with the soil, the rain, the sunshine. You get in touch with Mother Earth and eating in such a way, you feel in touch with true life, your roots, and that is meditation. If we chew every morsel of our food in that way we become grateful and when you are grateful, you are happy." - Thich Nhat Hanh
